A hybrid battery replacement costs Rs. 150,000–500,000. Before buying an Aqua, Prius, Vezel, Fit or Corolla Cross, here is how battery health, inverter and cooling are tested — and the warning signs you can spot yourself.
Hybrids are everywhere in Pakistan — Aqua, Prius, Vezel, Fit, Corolla Cross, Sportage HEV — and the single biggest risk in buying one used is the high-voltage battery. A failing pack works fine for a short test drive and dies in summer traffic. Here is how a proper hybrid inspection protects you.
What the hybrid inspection checks
- HV battery charge / discharge behaviour — how quickly the gauge drops under load and recovers on braking; a weak pack cycles rapidly.
- Cell / block balance — where diagnostics are available, blocks that sag more than the rest indicate ageing cells.
- Inverter wiring harness — burns, chafing or rodent damage on the orange high-voltage cables.
- Battery cooling filter and fan — a blocked filter under the rear seat overheats the pack; the most common and cheapest cause of early failure.
- Appearance of HV components in the MID — warning triangles, "check hybrid system", stored codes.
- Drive modes — EV, Eco, Normal, Sport engage correctly; EV mode holds at low speed with a healthy pack.
- Coolant level in the inverter loop — separate from the engine coolant.
Warning signs you can spot yourself
- The engine starts and stops every few seconds at idle — the pack cannot hold charge.
- Battery gauge falls to two bars after one hard acceleration.
- Fan noise behind the rear seat on a cool day.
- "Reconditioned battery" in the ad — usually a few weak cells swapped, not a new pack.
- Imported car older than 8–9 years with the original pack.
Replacement cost
Depending on the model: Aqua / Prius ~Rs. 150,000–300,000 for a good used or refurbished pack, Vezel / Fit similar, newer Toyota HEV packs from the dealership considerably more. That number should be in your head when you negotiate.
